Window Cleaning Tips

A Few Useful Window Cleaning Tips

The following window cleaning tips are a great find, and this task can be made simple if you are willing to spend small chunks of time periodically throughout the month rather than saving it all for one day. I would be remise to exclude the use of vinegar in my window cleaning tips, as this method has been tried, tested, and true for over one hundred years. Windows can also be cleaned with mere hot water on a sponge, followed by a brisk wiping dry with the use of a lint free absorbent towel. Most store bought spray window cleaners work well, though the key ingredient in many of them is alcohol. This can be harmful if dripped onto finished wood panes or painted surfaces, so learning how to get along without them may be a good choice altogether.

To begin using the following window cleaning tips, you will first need to decide whether your window treatments are also in need of a good washing. There is little sense in having sparkly glass to peer out of when the decorative pieces surrounding it are faded and dingy. Once you have decided on this factor, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. The actual cleaning time for a standard, two section window is about four minutes, so doing them in sets of three of four should be quite manageable. The first of our window cleaning tips is to make a mixture of one part vinegar and one part water. You can use a clean spray bottle for easy application, or you can mix this in a bucket and apply it with a rag or sponge. When distributing your vinegar solution on the window, be sure to cover the entire surface. Using newspaper or paper towel, wipe the window firmly and thoroughly until it squeaks to a shine. Don’t forget the edges and corners!

If you are lucky enough to have windows which fold in for ease of cleaning, then you’ve pretty much got it made. If not, please contact a professional for windows that are too high for you to safely reach. An outdoor power washer can also be used for these hard to clean areas, just be sure that the window is completely closed and sealed before cleaning it this way. The same vinegar solution can be used outdoors, and you will depend on the warmth of the sun and a good squeegee for the streak free shine that you desire.

Window cleaning tips regarding stained and beveled glass windows are a bit more intense, but still rather easy when taken care of regularly. For old, delicate stained glass, a simple application of hot water and a lint free towel for shining will do wonders. For beveled glass, you may need to apply your vinegar and water dilution with a fine bristled toothbrush, drying that area quickly and thoroughly with your clean towel.
